HISTORY AND PROMOTION...!
|
At 67 years old, and after a lifetime dedicated to the study, practice and dissemination of Karate and traditional Budo, Gustavo Gondra received two of the highest distinctions that a practitioner can achieve within Japanese and Okinawan martial arts.
In October 2024, during his visit to Japan, in the city of Sapporo in Hokkaido, and at the headquarters of the International Karate Masters Association, led by Sensei Katsumi Okubo, 10th Dan, he was awarded the rank of tenth dan in Karate. This recognition represented a profound tribute to decades of career, dedication and commitment to the true spirit of Budo.
Later, in 2026, during an emotional visit to Sensei Takemasa Okuyama 10th Dan, with whom he has maintained a martial link since 1997 within the Hachiokai World Budo Federation, he received a new and important distinction. After that meeting, and as an expression of recognition for his career within the organization, he was also awarded the tenth dan of the Hachiokai World Budo Federation, signed by Kancho Okuyama himself. Both recognitions, from international organizations and from teachers of extensive experience and prestige, represent for Gustavo Gondra not only an immense honor, but also a profound responsibility. Far from interpreting them as a point of arrival, he considers them a noble burden and an even greater commitment to continue transmitting the traditional values of Karate and Budo. With humility and gratitude, he expresses his deep gratitude to Sensei Katsumi Okubo and Sensei Takemasa Okuyama for having taken him into account to reach this significant moment in his martial life. |

BUDO
"One Way, Many Masters" |
BUDO is not just a martial arts book.
It is the journey of a life dedicated to the path of karate, discipline, inner search and learning with great masters of Okinawa, Japan, the United States and the world.
Through real stories, personal experiences and historical moments, the author opens the doors of more than fifty years of practice, travels, teachings and challenges, showing the true spirit of Budo: the way of the warrior understood as a way of life.
In these pages, tradition, honor, humility and personal evolution coexist, narrated from the perspective of someone who went through karate from its deepest roots starting in 1971 to becoming an international reference.
An intimate, historical and human work, intended not only for martial arts practitioners, but also for those who seek to understand the value of effort, loyalty and self-improvement. |

BUDO "ONE PATH, MANY TEACHERS"
Fourth book by Gustavo Gondra / Here, one of its chapters......
|
A CONCERN In this chapter Gustavo Gondra has a very great depth because he does not only talk about karate or only about family. It talks about something that usually appears over the years: the awareness of continuity. For decades he took for granted that there was natural offspring, both familial and martial. Their children practiced, the organization grew, the students advanced, and the future seemed to have a definite course. It was only when circumstances changed, especially after 2021, that a question appeared that did not need to be asked before.
THE OFFSPRING
I started practicing karate in 1971, having just arrived from the countryside, I never thought about the offspring. My goal was to learn, grow and walk a path that I was passionate about. In 1979 I obtained my black belt and that same year I began teaching, something that over time would become my profession and the way of life that accompanied me for more than four decades.
I always wanted to start a family. I was lucky enough to do it and to build it around what I loved so much. In 1982 that stage of my life began. My children, Juan Pablo, María Paz and Nicolás, were born. There were also two children, one who unfortunately was not born (Juan Ignacio) and another who was born deceased (Nahuel), but who are part of our memory and our family history.
Looking back, I feel that much of what we build as a family I owe to karate. I met Marta through karate. Later life continued its course and today Roxana, also through karate, is part of my present, but my entire family history was born within this martial path. My children grew up around dojos, trips, tournaments, seminars, and meetings. They practiced karate and shared with me a way of life that seemed destined to continue naturally.
For many years I never worried about continuity. I took it for granted.
However, from 2021 something changed profoundly with Marta's death. The family suffered a huge blow. Nicolás stopped practicing, Juan Pablo went to live in another country and María Paz took her own path. Today the only granddaughter in the family is María Paz's daughter. Juan and Nicolás don't have children, and I don't know if they ever will. For the first time in my life, a question appeared that I had never asked myself: what will happen to the offspring?
And I'm not just talking about family.
I also talk about karate.
For decades I thought that the continuity of the organization, the school and the work done was assured. I thought of a natural succession, as it happens in many traditional Okinawan families. I was thinking of the Uechi family, where the offspring maintain the leadership, although there are people with higher ranks. Not because leadership depends exclusively on grade, but because there is a family legacy that deserves to be respected.
I imagined something similar for the organization that I built over so many years. Not because my children were necessarily the most graduated or the most experienced, but because they represent a historical continuity of something that was born and grew up with them.
Today I'm not so sure anymore.
I don't know what will happen the day I'm gone. I don't know who will continue the work. I don't know what fate the organization will have. And although he did notI would say that it is a permanent concern, it is a thought that comes back again and again.
I would like one of my children to continue this path. I would like the organization to continue to exist. I would like the way of working that we built for so many years not to disappear.
The style will continue to be Uechi Ryu. That shouldn't change. I have always defended the preservation of traditional karate and I believe that one of the most important responsibilities of those of us who receive an inheritance is to transmit it without distorting it.
But I also think about my students.
From 1979 until today I have had hundreds, perhaps thousands of students. Many of them became excellent practitioners, instructors, and people. Perhaps true continuity does not depend only on the family, but also on them.
When Sensei Gushi passed away, I kept going. I did it practically alone. I remember his words telling me that I had the necessary conditions and that I should trust myself more. At that moment I took on a huge responsibility and continued walking.
I hope my students can do the same.
I hope they trust themselves.
May they understand that preserving a tradition does not mean copying a person, but keeping alive the principles that person defended.
Many times, when someone joins an organization, they are asked to change in order to transform themselves into the image and likeness of the person who leads it. Little by little, what each one brings with them is lost and their identity ends up being diluted.
I would like that not to happen with the work we have developed for so many years.
If there is one thing I have tried to convey from 1979 until today, it is a particular way of understanding karate, a way of practicing, teaching and relating to others. That's the tradition I'd like to see remain.
I still have hope.
I hope to live many more years. I hope to continue teaching. I hope to meet many new students and continue enjoying this path that has given me so much.
And I also hope that the family will find a closer direction to the one they had for so many years. Not exactly the same, because time never goes back, because memories tell us that it is no longer the same, but it is similar enough to feel that what we build together continues to have continuity as long as one of us has life.
I never thought too much about the offspring because I thought I already had them.
Today, when I perceive that it is no longer a certainty, I think of it more than ever, causing sorrow and sadness at times.
May God, destiny, and life grant me the chance to see how that legacy finds its way.
If that happens, I will be deeply grateful here and in eternity. |
